First Consultation

What to expect at your first consultation

Most of us have been to surgeries or clinics at some point in our lives but, if this is the first time you have been treated at the Littlejohn Centre, it's worth taking a few moments to understand what's involved.

Arrival

When you arrive you will be welcomed by the receptionist who will tell you about the centre and how we may help you.

After checking your details with you, we explain the lay-out of the centre and give you explanatory literature. We will also tell you about the practitioner you'll be seeing and how your appointment may proceed. You will then be shown into the waiting area, where you may be asked to fill in some forms giving details of your general medical history.

While you're waiting for your consultation, please look at the leaflets on display. These may help you understand our principles on health care and Osteopathy, as well as our philosophy. If there aren't any leaflets on display please ask the receptionist.

Soon, your practitioner will come and escort you to a private consultation room, where he or she will ask you about your condition and how you feel they can help.

Your first consultation

The format of an initial consultation varies, depending on which treatment or service you have come for, but certain aspects are common to all.

Your practitioner begins by taking a detailed case history, not only of your current symptoms or problem but also of your past history and medical record. This information helps him/her to understand why your current symptoms or problems have developed. When the cause is understood you as well as the practitioner, can identify the steps needed to bring you back to health physically and emotionally.
